Vanarkavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple at Madakthanam, Kappu in Ernakulam district, is about 800 years old. The Goddess is consecrated as Bhuvaneswari here. According to legend a King of Madurai had to abandon his land because of his enemies. A lady used to come to the palace every day in the morning and go back in the evening. She used to offer some work in the kitchen. But she would not eat anything from there or accept anything given to her. The people in the palace thought that she must be somebody from the neighborhood. When the King had to leave the place, she too went with more him. The King and his retinue stayed at a place near the site of the present temple and built a palace there. Here also the lady used to come in the morning and leave at dusk. The King was curious to find out where she was going as the place was surrounded by a forest. On investigation it was found that she came to a tree in the forest and disappeared. Those who had been following her saw an effulgence on the tree. After this the lady did not come to the palace. The King understood the divinity of the lady and constructed a temple for her at the place where the effulgence had been noticed.
