The temple is at Thakazhi, a village six km
away from Ambalapuzha in Alleppy district. Lord Shastha is the main deity. The
deity faces the east. There are no sub deities.
Legend says that Vilwamangalam Swamiyar found an idol that came along
with the waters of the river Pampa. He entrusted the idol with Sage Udayarkka.
He consecrated the idol here. There is also a version that the idol was the one
that Parasuama had consecrated at Otharamala which had been immersed in the mud
of the filed during the very heavy rains. As the idol had been covered with
mud, the Sage cleaned it
more
by rubbing the mud away and washing it. Hence the
place where it was found came to be known as Thazhuki (rubbed gently) and then
it became Thakazhi. There is also the belief that it was once a Buddhist
temple. It was the ruler of
Chembakaserry and the local people who built the temple. The “Valiyenna “that
is prepared and given from this temple has great medicinal quality. It is
supposed to cure arthritis, jaundice, and Tuberculosis. It is made from 84
medicinal plants from the Othara hill, 64 other medicinal plants and many oils.
There is a belief that the Kerala Brahmins learned medicine from the Buddhists.
So, the preparation of the oil must have come to them from the Buddhists who
had the temple there. The temple is now under the Travancore
