Lord Siva is the presiding deity of this temple at Kasargod. According to a legend, the self-manifested Siva Linga was found by an old lady named Madharu. Hence the temple came to be known as Madhur temple. There is a myth about the Ganesha idol of this temple. A small Brahmin boy carved a small Ganesha on the wall of the sanctum. Gradually it grew and became a big Ganesh idol. The boy used to call the idol Bodda Ganesha. Later the idol was named Madanantheshwara Siddhi Vinayaka. When Tippu Sultan invaded Kasargod, he planned to destroy this temple. While approaching the temple he drank the
more waters of the Madhuvahini (the temple tank) and suddenly left without attacking the temple. Kashi Vishwanatha, Dharmashastha, Subrahmanya, Durga, Veerabhadra and Gulika are the sub deities. There is also the presence of Goddess Parvathy inside the sanctum.
