Mithranandapuram Thrimoorthy Temple

History

The temple is unique as there the Thrimurtis, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara are consecrated. It is located on the western side of the Padmanabha swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Lord Brahma is consecrated in the sitting position while Lord Vishnu is in the standing posture. According to the legends it was Vilwamangalathu Swamiyar who consecrated the idols. There is also the belief that the Trimurthis conducted a yajna there to please the Sun god. That is why it came to be known as Mithranandapuram – The town that gave happiness to the Sun. Previously this temple was considered as a subsidiary of the Padmanabhaswamy temple. Historical records more show that the rulers of Travancore used to worship here before taking any important decisions. The temple was renovated in 1748 by Maharaja Marthandavarma. The administration of the temple used to be supervised by the Travancore and Cochin Kings. Previously it belonged to the Ettara Yogam. Now it is under the Travancore Devaswom Board.
