This ancient temple is at North Paravoor in
Ernakulam district. According to a legend about the origin of this temple, one
of the rulers of the area was an ardent devotee of Mookambika at Kollur and
used to visit the temple and worship the Goddess every month. But as he became
old he found it difficult to make the trip to Kollur. As he left the Temple at Kollur
for the last time he was very sad. But he continued to worship her from his
home. Then once he had a dream in which the Goddess seemed to talk to him. She
directed him
more
to build a temple near his house where he could visit every day.
The Goddess promised to be there. So, the Thampuran found a place outside the
fort and built the temple. After the consecration, the Thampuran opened the
temple for all devotees. The sanctum here is unique as it is in the middle of a
lotus pond. It is believed to represent the holy river Souparnika which
originates from the Kutajadri and comes to the northern side of the Kollur Mookambika
temple. The level of water in this pond never rises or falls at any time.
