This temple in the Palaghat district is one of the most important Durga temples in Kerala. It is also seen as the Mookambika temple of Valluvanadu. It is one of the 108 Durga temples established by Parasurama. According to a legend Parasurama found the effulgence of the Goddess at the place near the Bharathapuzha and consecrated the Bhagavathy facing the east. But as instructed by the Sun he later made the Goddess face the west. This is one of the rare places where the Goddess is consecrated facing the west. Legend also says that Panchali worshiped this Goddess more when she and the Pandavas were staying in the forest.
