In the heart of Kottayam town is this 500-year-old temple built by the Thekkumkoor Maharajah. The Koothambalam, the special building in the temple premises used for cultural purposes, is one of the best in Kerala. One among 108 Siva temples at Kottayam. Main deity is Siva which is believed to be self-originated. Faces east with five poojas and Thazhaman Madam do the thanthries. Sub deities are Ganapathy, Ayyappa, Bhagavathy, Rakshas, Subramanya and Vadakkumnathan. Flag post is gold and three festivals celebrated. 'Panguni festival' for 10 days from 1st of Meenam. 'Ani festival' for 8 days in Midhunam. 'Alpasi' festival for six days during Thulam. It more is believed that Siva himself originated when Thekkumkoor Raja prayed Vadakkumnathan. "Punassery Moothathu" be- haved indecently with ladies who came to the temple both Moothathu and ladies are not permitted to enter the temple.
