Thirunelli Maha Vishnu Temple

History

This is an ancient temple and is a Mahaskhetra situated on the slopes of the Brahmagiri, in Tirunelli at Wayanad district, famous for performing rituals intended to give rest to the departed souls. Dense forests sur- round the four sides of the temple. One can see the wild elephants and flocks of deer on the road. The presiding deity is Mahavishnu, facing east. Sub- deities are Ganapathi, Nagam and Hanuman. On the western side of the temple there is a cave temple in which Gundiga Siva is present, and on the southern side Bhadrakali and Vettaikaren are also present. There is a two-day festival, which more ends on Vishu day. There is a guideline that the temple should use only their own elephant for taking the lords in a procession. There is no well in this temple, and in olden days water was brought from Papanashini. Now water is been drawn from a pond in the Brahmagiri girl hills through a unique way of using bamboo chan- nels, and it is one of the ancient methods and technology of water supply system. This temple is known as the Thekkan Kashi (Kashi of the South) and surrounded by Kambamala, Karimala and Varadiga, the Thirunelly Temple is a marvel of traditional temple architecture. The shrine is shielded with 30 granite columns and the ground is paved with huge square pieces of granite.
