Thiruvazhappally Sreemahadeva Temple

History

This temple is believed to have been constructed during the time of the 1st Chera Dynasty. Parasurama, the creator of Keralam, who established 108 Siva temples, is believed to have consecrated the idol of Mahadeva here too. The idol of this temple is believed to be that of the Neelamperoor temple originally. According to legends, Chera Raja Pallibana Perumaal was a believer in Budha. When he was dethroned by the Hindu Bhattas after being defeated in an argument, he came to Neelamperoor. The Potties of Pathillams heard that the Perumaal was going to install the idol of Budha in the Neelamperoor temple. So, the Potties more took the idol of Lord Siva at Neelamperoor and rushed to Vazhapally and installed it at the temple here.
