Vadakkunnathan Temple

History

This is one of the very famous and oldest temples in Kerala and situated in the heart of Trissur city. Many historical events are there in connection with the temple. Trissur pooram, the foremost and famous festival in kerala, is celebrated in the vicinity of this temple. Sree Sankara Narayanan, Siva and Sree Rama are the presiding deities of the temple. In the northern side Lord Siva is installed in a round shaped sanctum sanctorum and the southern side belongs to Sree Rama. Sree Sankara Narayana is consecrated in the centre. Lord Siva faces the West and in the same sanctum sanctorum of Lord Siva more there is Sree Parvathy facing the East. Sree Sankara Narayanan is more powerful and therefore has more importance. Three poojas are conducted daily. Thanthram is Puliyannoor. Ganapathy, Ayyappan, Gosalakrishnan, 314 Vettakkaran, Rishabhan, Simhodaran, Nrithanathan are the sub deities of this great temple. In the temple there is a sepulcher and it is believed that it is the sepulcher of Sankaracharyar or a disciple of Sankaracharyar. The largest Koothambalam in Kerala is situated in this temple. The Koothambalam has 23% meters length and 17%½ meters width. The four gopurams (main entrances) were built by the four kings of the time and among these the famous southern entrance was constructed by Kodungalloor Thamburan. The temple is administered by Cochin Devaswoim Board. In the temple there is no festival celebrations.
