Thrikaruva Bhadrakali Temple

History

Thrikkaruva Sree Bhadrakali temple is one of the oldest temples in Kollam District. The origin of the temple is connected with Daksha Yaga. The deity is in the fierce form after the killing of Daksha. The idol is a five-foot-high Daaru Bimbam (an idol made of the trunk of the jackfruit tree) facing north. Such consecrations are rare in Kerala. The temple has a recorded history of 1200 years. The place is historically important for Devan Mahadevan, one of the members of the Ettara Yogam, who controlled the administrative machinery of the former state of Travancore, lived in a palace near the temple.
