In the days of yore, the major part of the present Ernakulam district was ruled over by Anchu Kaimal. The most important among them was the Cheranelloor Kartha, based at Varapuzha. The Sree Chakra at the Sree Chakreswari temple was worshipped by the Cheranelloor Kartha. The consecration of the Sree Chakra, facing east is a very rare one. People believed that the strength and fame of the Cheranelloor Kartha was the result of the blessing of the Sree Chakra in this temple.
