This is one of the ancient temples of Kerala.
This Mahadeva temple was consecrated by Sage Sree Parasurama. It is believed
that the presiding deity Mahadeva is in meditation pose. In the past the
appearance of the temple was towards the western side. But it is said that
Vilwamangalath Swami has changed it towards the eastern side. The sub - deities
of the temple are Mahaganapathy, Sree Krishna, Yakshiyamma, Nagaraja, Sree
Dharmasastha and Rakshas. More importance is given to Yakshiyamma than
Mahadeva. Little distance away to the West of the temple there is a river. The
river bank is known as Arattukadavu and the place
more
between the river and the
temple is known as Thevarkadu. Mahadeva, Yakshiyamma and Mahaganapathy are
easily pleased, so people from faraway places also throng here to give
offerings and gain blessings of the Gods. There is daily pooja for Yakshiyamma.
The 8 days temple festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam
as arattu falls in the Thiruvathira star. After ekadasi and before vavu during
thrayodasi the Pradosha Pooja is performed and the pradhosham that occurs on
Saturdays is considered to be very auspicious. It is believed that on this day
Lord Siva drunk the poison kalakuda and saved this universe from destruction.
During pradhosha Lord Siva performs ananda natana in heaven (kailasa) and it is
believed that all the Gods and Goddesses will be present there at that time.
Since the prodhosha time is considered to be extremely auspicious all those who
participate in the poojas and offerings will definitely obtain blessings from
the Lord. The temple belonged to the 33 Brahmin families of the village known
as Ilibhyam. So, the temple got the name Muppathu Muvar Kulam. There are three
ponds on the 3 sides of the temple even today. Now the temple is owned by
Azhavancherry Thambrakkal.
