Kadavil Sree Mahalekshmi Temple the legend
about the origin of this temple is connected with a group of people who were
living in Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu and were great devotees of Goddess
Mahalakshmi. Once due to some disturbance these people had to leave that place.
Within a few days the Goddess also reached here. The Goddess chose to be where
her devotees were and even today they are sure that she will come to their help
when they pray to her. The Goddess is depicted as carrying the Shankh and the
Chakra (the conch and the discuss) that are associated with Lord Vishnu.

She
carries a bird and a spike of corn also in her hands, representing agriculture.
The temple faces the Vembanad Lake, and the Goddess remains ever ready to bless
her devotees with prosperity. Devotees offer "Uruli Kamazthal' (keeping an
Uruli,a vase made of bell metal generally used in temples for preparing cooked
offerings to the deity) for being blessed with children. The important
celebrations in the temple are Makam Thozhal, worshipping the goddess on star
Makam in the month of Kumbham, Kanakaabhishekam on the day of Akshaya Thriteeya
and the annual festival from star Makam to star Anizham in the month of
Makaram. Devotees can offer Mahalakshmi Puja to be blessed with a good
marriage, to be blessed with a house of your own or for getting a good job and
Pantheeradi Paal Paayasam for fulfilling the desires (a sweet made of rice,
milk and sugar) to be offered to the Goddess. The Thanthri (chief priest) of
the temple is Monattu Illathu Krishnan Namboothiri. The temple can be reached
by going about 10Km from Cherthala and turning right at Pallippuram. The
sanctum of the Goddess is to be renovated and covered with copper plate. The
work will start in October 2013.
