Kaithacode Sree Durgadevi Temple

History

The Kaithakode Kanyarkavu, Sree Vanadurga Nagaraja temple is centuries old. The main deity is, the Devi with three eyes, facing the east. She has eight hands with Sankhu, Chakra and other weapons, wearing a garland made of the flowers of a medicinal plant. (Katterikku), seated on a lion with the right leg resting on the left leg, dark in complexion, with anklets on her feet and who is easily pleased with the prayers of her devotees. It seems that in ancient times this place was a thick forest where sunlight could not enter. A place where Tapasvis came to perform Tapas. So, it is more believed that Tapasvis might have installed the idol. Ancient people have seen the Devi with her followers, walking away with lighted lamps. It is said that the Devi after bath in Moolethottu, enters the Sreekovil and after Athazhapooja goes to the origin Indilappa temple daily and returns. Nagaraja: There are two types of Naga worship, that is the Shiva and Vaishnava. The Vaishnava Aradhana is being followed in this temple. Separate shrines have been built for Nagaraja, Nagakanyaka and Nagayakshi amma and daily poojas are performed. The worship conducted here is similar to that of the famous Nagaraja temples of Vettikode and Mannarshala. But here the difference is the presence of Naga Kanyaka. Those who have no children perform the special offering known as 'Uruli Kamazhthal' and beget children. Also, there are other poojas for getting the Blessings of the Naga devatas which has brought all kinds of prosperity to many devotees. There is also the presence of Brahma Rakshas in the Kanni Moola' which also blesses the devotees with prosperity. There are many couples who have overcome matrimonial obstacles by garlanding the Devi with lemon garlands and participating in 'Sarva Aiswarya Pooja. In India this is the only temple where you find the Yaga Agni. The Sree Vidyagni said to be 1146 years old is found here. A Maharshi known as Vikalanetri Acharya of Thrissur Cheruvatheri Vellathittu Kizhakedathu Mana is said to have performed this Sree Vidya yagam 1146 years ago. The famous poet Mahakavi Akkitham has brought this Divine Agni from that Mana, in a grand procession, visiting 108 great temples to this temple and installed it here in the right place. Many people come here to have Darshan of this Agni. The 18 puranas of Sree Veda Vyasa are to be delivered to the people in the form of yajnas, (they are trying to do that). The first one is the 'Agni Purana Mahayajnam' to be conducted in the presence of the Yaga Agni. It is to be named 'Bharata Punyapurana Darshana Charitrayanam' and will take place during Navaratri. Sree V.B.Madhavan Namboodiri of Thrissur has been chosen as the Acharya for 18 years. The tanthri of this temple is N.Vasudeva Bhattathiri of Cherupoyaka Mudapilapalli madom. Since he is strict, all the rituals are conducted according to the rules of the Vedas and shastras. The way to the temple is 20 kms away from Quilon National Highway.
