Koonampayikkulam Sree Bhadrakali Temple

History

This Bhadrakali temple is very ancient. There was a devotee of Kodungalloor Bhagawathy. It is said that he went to Kodungalloor and meditated upon the Devi who appeared to him and he brought the Devi in the form of a clay Peedam to his native place. He satisfied the Devi by performing Guruthi Pooja'. The Devi is said to have blessed the Royal family and also the people. The royal family donated vast areas of land to the deity where the Devi was worshipped only in 'Sankalpa' without an Idol or temple. This place is situated in Kollam District. People of all castes and more creed come here to offer worship. The place has natural beauty with all kinds of trees like the Baniyan and palm trees growing in plenty. In this vast and peaceful area, the Devi who removes all problems and grants all wishes resides blessing the devotees. In the year 2000 on 16th April, a Panchaloha idol of the Devi was installed by Brahamasri Mangad Subramanyan thanthri. All rituals and Poojas are being performed here daily. There are other deities like Sree Ganapathy, Brahma Rakshas, Yogeeswara, Kandhakarnan, Veerabhadra and Yakshi amma. Besides these deities there is a separate place set aside for the Nagaraja and Nagayakshi. Those who have Rahu Dosha perform pooja for the Nagas and also those who do not have children and face obstacles in marriage participate in these rituals. Every month Ayilya pooja is performed by singing devotional songs. The Ashta Naga Pooja is performed for prosperity during the Temple festival. There is a sacred pond for the performance of "Arattu' during the festival and 'yagam' season. The Bharani festival is conducted during the month of Kumbha. Ten days before the star Bharani the temple flag is hoisted. There is "Thotta Pattu", Para, Pallivetta etc. After flag hoisting on the first Friday devotees offer Chandra Pongala in new mud pots. Keeping Vrata devotees bring 'Vattipaduku' from their houses as offering to the Devi. Every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. there is 'Kariya Siddhi' pooja and 'Kumkum Abhishekam'. It is said that those who attend this pooja will have all their desires fulfilled. Mrityunjaya homa and Ganapathi Homam are performed for the welfare of the people. There is also 'Neeranjana Vilakku' and Naranga (lemon) vilakku. On the last Tuesday of every Malayalam month there is 'Kashaya Kalasham' for removal of diseases. The Devi of Koonampayikulam blesses devotees by fulfilling their desires, protecting them and punishing the evil things. All the devotees who face problems and sorrows are taken care of by the Devi. Those who participate in the 'Karya Siddhi' pooja for 21 weeks are sure to attain all their desires. They have to keep 'Vrata' and accept a coin, attend 'Abhishekam' and receive the blessings of the Devi.
