Situated 16 km. south-east of Kannur at Peralasseri (on Keezhanthalli junction (on NH-17) Koothuparamba road) and thence 200m. towards the east, the temple is connected by a tarred road. The Etakkatav River flows about a km. east of the temple. Facilities for stay are available at Peralasseri and also at Kannur. Datable to a very ancient period, believed to be in three-yuga, the legends say that Sree Raama and Sree Lakshmana reached here on their way to Lanka in search of Seetha. Seeing this place as a suitable site for the consecration of an idol of Lord Subrahmanya, Sree Raama directed Sree Aanjaneya to bring
more an idol before the auspicious time. As Sree Aanjaneya could not bring the idol on time. Sree Raama took out his Peru-vala (bracelet of the upper arm) and installed it with the Sankalpa of Lord Subrahmanya. Because of this incident, the place was called Peru-valacheri, later Peruvalasseri, and now Peralasseri. There is a legend associated with the temple. Once there was a dual of words between Lord Brahma and Lord Subrahmanya regarding the meaning of Om. Lord Subrahmanya was not satisfied with the answer given by Lord Brahma and hence He directed Veerabaahu to tie down Lord Brahma. The captivity of Lord Brahma affected His noble duty of creation. Lord Siva interfered and released Lord Brahma. Greatly pained by His actions, Lord Subrahmanya took the form of Naaga. Goddess Parvati was very sad to see Lord Subrahmanya as Naaga. At the advice of Lord Siva, Paarvathi took vrith on Shashti-tithi on sukla-paksha and Lord Subrahmanya regained his original form. Thereafter, Shashti became an important day in temples dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya. The temple tank is also considered sacred and it is believed that the spring of the tank is connected underground with the waters of Kaveri River. Therefore, Kaaveri-cameraman is celebrated in this temple every year. The main vazhipaadu are sarppa-bali and sarppa-bali with parivaara pooja, besides offering of eggs to Naaga. Each one is done for a specific purpose ie. Sarppa-bali for cure from diseases, sarppa-bali with marinara-pooja for progeny and offering of the egg for Naaga for peace of mind. Festival: The annual festival is held for eight days from the 4th Dhanu to the 11th Dhanu. On the 4th kotiyett is held followed by Kaazhccha sreebali and thitamb-nrththam, pancha-vaadyam and other accompaniments are added attractions.
