Veerabhadra Swami Temple

History

This temple is situated at a place of unique natural beauty where the Ashtamudi Lake and Kallatayaar join the Arabian Sea in the Kollam district. It is believed to be hundreds of years old. Veerabhadra is consecrated as a sub-deity in many temples but it is only very rarely that He is consecrated as the main deity in Kerala. The temple is connected with the legend of Daksha Yaga. When Daksha conducted a Yaga, he invited everyone but his daughter and her husband Lord Siva were not invited for it. Sathi decided to go there uninvited but she was humiliated at the place. Distraught more at this she gave up her life in the fire at the Yaga. The infuriated Lord Siva created Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali from his tuft of hair and sent them to kill Daksha. Daksha with his head severed, crawled around Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali begging for life. As requested by the Devas, a goat’s head was fixed on his torso. This temple is unique for the special rituals that are performed here. Devotees perform Urul (lying down on the temple ground and making a circumambulation by rolling the body) the cure the diseases that affect domestic animals and for achieving what is desired.
