Anthinadu Sree Mahadeva Temple

History

Sree Mahadeva Kshethra in the picturesque village of Anthinadu is in the Meenachil Thaluk of Kottayam District.  This is one of the few temples where Shree Mahadeva and Sree Parvathy Devi, the embodiment of power, are consecrated together. Sree Mahadeva is consecrated facing the east and Devi is consecrated facing the west.  Many devotees come from far and near to worship Mahadeva with his consort in a gentle form.  There is a Bhagavathy temple very near to this temple. Shaasthaav, Rakshass, Yakshi and Nagas have been consecrated as minor deities. The main offerings in the temple are Jaladhara, Ksheeradhaara, Arunaazhi payasam, Mruthyunjaya Homama and Ulsavabali. The temple belonged to more the Anthinad Variyam.  But it was destroyed during the march of Tipu Sultan. The temple was under the protection of the Vadakumkoor Royal family. According to legends, during the attack, the Royal family deposited the flag post and the other valuables in the pond and left for Vaikom after leaving poisoned food for the invading soldiers. It was in the Malayalam Era of 1075 that the temple was renovated by Kunjan Varier, the head of the family at that time. Many prominent personalities have been associated with this temple. Mahakavi Sree Ramapurathu Varier used to teach the children on the temple premises. Mahakavi  Naranan, Kidangoor Krishna Varier, Fidelist Rama Varier, Artist G.K.Varier, poet Laalam Neelakanda Varier are some among them. There used to be Tharakoorttam associated with the temple.  For the festival, Thottakalam Thullal was an important offering.  This is similar to the Patayani, popular in the South Travancore temples.  This used to be conducted for five days with the support of all the people.  As the temple properties had been lost due to the changes in the laws from time to time, the temple administration was taken over by the Anthinaadu N.S.S. Karayogam on April 1, 1971. The running of the temple is managed with the cooperation of the devotees. Brahmasree Madavan Nampoothiri of Payyapilli Illam, Iringalakuda is the Thanthri and Brahmasree Kesavan Namboothiri of Kallampilly Illam is the Melshanthi.
