Muthoor Sree Bhadrakali Temple is one of Kerala's four famous Bhadrakali Temples. The other three are Kodungalloor, Varanad and Panayannarkavu Devi Temples. These four temples are interrelated. According to an old saying the time of prime presence of Devi in these temples is as follows. At dawn at Kodungallor, noon at Varanad, dusk at Muthoor and midnight at Panayannarkavu. In Muthoor Devi Temple Sree Bhadrakali is worshipped as holding in one of her Ashtabahukkal (Eight Hands) the head of the Demon Darika after killing him. On the left and the right of the Devi are the children Sundari and Sumukhi more who alleviate Devi’s rage. There is a Mathrusala in the Devi Temple where the Sapthamathrukkal (Brahmi, Maheswari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani, Chamundi) Ganapathy and Veerabhadran are worshipped. The construction of Muthoor Devi Temple is a rare one. It has a Malikappuram (upper storey), believed to be the abode of Vasoorimala. Inside the nalampalam there is a Sivan Kovil. There are kovils for Ganapathy and Kshethrapalakan also. Outside the nalampalam, opposite to the Devi Sree Kovil, there is a Kalayakshi Temple. It is a roofless temple. Outside the nalampalam are the deities Chitta and Chirutha, and Nagathanmar. The Sree-moolasthanam is near Muthoor Junction and the Elamkavu is Althara at Muthoor. The Temple is owned and governed by Muthoor N.S.S Karayogam No 734. Muthoor Devi Temple is 1.5 km north of Thiruvalla Town and the KSRTC Bus Stand. Muthoor lies on the M.C. Road, between Thiruvalla and Changanacherry. The Temple is 1 furlong east of Muthoor Junction. Muthoor is only 1.5 km away from the Thiruvalla Railway Station.
