Sree Krishna Swami Temple Mavelikkara

History

This famous temple on the banks of the river Achankovil is unique for the deity in the form of Navaneethakrishna. The idol with arms has two of them held out asking for butter. Another speciality is that the deity is taken out on Garuda. The temple itself is enriched with so many sculptures. The sanctum is covered with copper plates while the flag post is coated with gold. There is a brass lamp in front of the Aanakottil (covered area for the elephants to stand) which is thirty feet high. On the four corners of the base of more the lamp can be seen the figures of four Dutch soldiers. This points to the historical incident in 1746 when Marthanda Varma, the King of Travancore defeated the Dutch and got Mavelikkara under his control. This lamp was presented to the temple by the Dutch as part of the agreement after the battle. It symbolises that the Dutch soldiers are standing guard at the temple. Ganapathy, Siva and Navagrahas are the sub-deities here. The temple is believed to be around 1300 years old. The land where the temple stands today belonged to the Edassery family in the beginning.  While tilling the land one of the workers got the idol from the soil. The eldest male member of the family saw that it was the figure of Krishna asking for butter. So, he constructed a small temple there and consecrated the idol. Later the Vadakkumkoor Raja gave the Puthiyakavu temple to the Edassery family and took over the management of the Sree Krishna temple. It was then reconstructed to the extent that we see today. Now it is under the Travancore Devaswom Board.
