This temple is believed to have been established by King Rajarajasekhara during the time of the second Chera dynasty. This is one of the 108 important Siva temples in Kerala. The main deity is Lord Mahadeva. Hence according to legend, it was consecrated by Parasurama. There is another legend according to which it was consecrated by Maharshi Rishyasringa. This is one of the few temples where Parvathy Devi is not consecrated with Parameswara.
