Five Sri Chakras, installed by Adi Sankaracharya are believed to be the source of the power of the Goddess. The priests are Namboothiris and the Adigas who have the right to perform Pushpanjali for the Goddess. Legends say that Kannaki Amman, the heroine of Silappadikaaram came to Kodungalur, prayed to the Goddess and attained salvation. The temple is believed to have been constructed by Cheraman Perumal. The first Shaktheya puja at

Even today the Theeya Thandaans of 64 tharas meet at Nilapaduthara at the temple in the presence of the Raja of Kodungalur at the beginning of the Meena Bharani festival which is conducted under the Thandaans.
