The Gowda Saraswat Brahmin temple known as the Muttathu Thirumala Devaswom, Cherthala is situated in the heart of the Municipal town. It was believed that this temple belonged to a Namboothiri of Muttathu Mana and the deity was Lord Siva. That may be the reason to procure the name Muttom Thirumala Devaswom. During the Ashtamangalya prasna regarding the temple which was conducted at Walkeswar Mutt in the presence of Sreemad Sudheendra Theertha Swamiji in Bombay too it was proved that the above version is correct. It was also clear that the so-called Namboothiri handed over the temple along with deities, land and other properties
more to the then-known two families called Alungal and Kothakulangara and later they handed over the same to the Gowda Saraswat Samaj. Even now the eldest member of those families is given respect and reverence as Maladhikaree by the temple management. Similarly, in the Siva temple mentioned above, Trikalapooja is being conducted even now. After taking over the charge of the temple by the Samaj, the temple changed to the path of the Vaishnavaite system. The main deity is Sree Lord Venkateswara with Sree Lakshmi on the left and Sree Bhoodevi on the right side. Also, Sree Ram Bhakta Hanuman and Bhaktha Garuda deities are kept in the Sreekovil. The deity of Sree Vigneswara is kept in the southwest comer facing east in the temple. Outside the Sreekovil in the temple premises at the northeastern comer is the Siva temple. Nearby that a large peetha is made and the Nagayakhees are placed and daily poojas are conducted. It is believed that the temple was built in 1763. Even before that and the completion of the present temple building, it is said that the main deity was placed under the Nelli tree by the Vaidik (priest) of the Vilakkinari Madom family and offered poojas. On its remembrance even now once in a year during Karthika Vritha, the deity is brought under the Nelli tree and pooja called Aval Bhajan is conducted. During the establishment of deities in 1763 by Sreemad Madhavendra Theertha Swamiji, His Holiness placed a Salagram of Sree Narasimha Moorthy which is supposed to be of very strong divine powers and of large size than the other salagrams there. Really the prosperity of the temple began from that date. Now Lord Narasimha is supposed to be the main Aaradyamoorthy of the temple and the Mahajana of this area are bearing the belief strongly. During 1974 July 1" there was a theft in the temple and some idols and other pooja items were taken away, even at that time the Narasimha saligram which was kept in a golden box was not taken by the thief who was later caught by the police and was questioned in the magistrate court as to why the golden box was left there. The answer was that he tried but he could not touch the item as he felt an electric shock. The case ended in favour of the temple and all the items stolen, including the idols, were returned. The Samaj people collected and put their efforts into the renewal of the idols. The efforts became fruitful when on 24.02.1975 the punaprathishta was conducted by Sreemad Sudheendra Theertha Swamiji of Sree Kashimatt Samsthan. In 1976 the Chathurmasa vritha of Swamiji was conducted here. After that, the temple, as well as the Samaj people, attained much progress through the Blessing of Hari and Guru and it is still continuing Among the many prosperous temples of Gowda Saraswat Brahmins in Kerala, Cherthala Muttom Thirumala Devaswom and the Samaj people here are always in the front and in the first category due to the good administration of the governing committee and the unity of the samaj people. The daily/monthly and Annual poojas and festivals are being conducted as per rules and norms of their own. The main festival of the temple is conducted in Chitra masa with Chathayam star as 1 day, Kodiyettam, and ends on Rohini star 8th day as Aarattu. The expenses of the first and last days of the festival are met by the Devaswom and all other seven days are sponsored by families and persons. The Devaswom does charitable help to the needy. The committee consisting of nine members who are elected from the samaj governs the temple
