Tali Mahakshethram

History

Tali Sri Maha Ganapathi Sri Balasubramanian Temple is a Saneeswara Navagraha Kshetra situated at the heart of the historical city of Calicut also known as Kozhikode. It is on the northwestern bank of the temple tank of Tali Siva temple, a magnificent monument representing the pomp and glory of the great Zamorin regime. It is owned and managed by Tali Brahmana Samooham, established by the Brahmin traders who migrated to Kerala from Tamilnadu, who consecrated the shrine, decades ago. Later when a flaw was noticed in the idol, it was put on jaladhivasa (Ceremonious immersion in a water source). The idol was then more replaced by the one that was worshipped beneath the banyan tree, at Tali Brahmana Samooha Madom Premises. The system of worship followed by the temple is in accordance with Agama Sastras prevalent and propagated by the Sringeri Mutt, one of the four Mutts Established by Jagadguru Sri Adi Sankara. In 1968, with the kind blessings of Jagadguru Sankaracharya of Sringeri mutt, Sri Sri Abhinava Vidhyatheertha Swamigal, a temple was consecrated to the shrine. Lord Mahaganapathi renowned for his benevolence graces the devotees to fulfil their wishes. There were Naga prathistas also at the base of the Banyan tree at the temple premises. His Holiness Sri Jagadguru Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, visited the temple with parivaras in 1972 when his holiness advised consecrating an idol of Lord Balasubramanian along with lord Maha Ganapathi in the premises. In accordance with the wishes of His Holiness, an idol of Lord Balasubramanian was consecrated by the construction of a separate sanctum sanatorium on the left side of Lord Mahaganapathi. In 1976, the consecration of Lord Balasubramanian and Kumbabhishekam was performed under the grace of H.H Parampoojya Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamigal of Avadootha Dutt Peetam, Mysore.  In the year 2001, being a Saneeswara Kshetram, a navagraha prathishta was also recommended. Accordingly, the entire temple was renovated, the Sreekovils were rebuilt, and the existing idols of Lord Mahaganapathi and Lord Balasubramanian were reinstalled. Prathista of Navagraha Devathas was also done.  Recognising the divine energy flow, a Hanuman deity is also worshipped on the southern side of the temple. On 7 May 2003, a Mahakumbhabhisham and Sahasra Kalashabishekam were conducted under the auspices of Sri Sri Sachidhananda Bharathi Swamigal of Sivaganga Madom, Bangalore. Poojas in the temple commence at 5 in the morning with Malar Neivedyam and Mahaganapathi Homam. This is followed by Abhishekam and Usha Pooja. Pooja for Nagaraja and Navagraha devatas follow and with the Madhyana Pooja, the sanctum sanctorum closes at 10.30 am.  The Temple re-opens at 5 in the evening.  After Deeparadhana and Athazha Pooja, the temple closes at 9.00 P.M. Before closing Gjnanapal is offered to Lord Muruga and is a speciality of this temple only. The glory of the temple has been sanctified by regular chanting of Vedic mantras and the devotion of worshippers. The temple carries a 35-foot-high Rajagopuram in Dravidian style constructed in 2003 and placed on 8 Chitra Thoons (Decorated Pillars) at the banks of Tali Tank is a remarkable view.  The only Temple which celebrates Vinayaka Chathurthi with weeklong poojas, festivals and other cultural functions culminating with Ashtadravyakoottu MahaGanapathy Homan performed on the Chaturthi day.
