Anandapuram Mahavishnu Temple

History

The aim of all beings on earth is to attain salvation. Salvation is the escape from the sea of life which is full of sorrow and suffering. Temples are the seats of culture created to enable even the foolish man to attain salvation.  In a temple, the God who fills the whole world is brought to reside in the idol which is consecrated in the sanctum. The devotee can know God and become one with Him by visiting the temple. Anandapuram Sree Mahavishnu Kshethram is one such unique temple. Mahavishnu embodying the wheel of time and the twelve names in more the different planetary positions around Him have been consecrated here which shines like the Vaikunda itself. The temple offers the realization of God even at first sight thereby making the name Ananthapuram meaningful. Salvation is the ultimate goal to be attained by man. A special feature of this temple is the consecration of Lord Krishna in Rasakreeda form, considered to depict the utmost state of joy in this world. Just as the Lord, shown as distributing the Holy Nectar provides ultimate joy to all who see him, the Lord, present in the sixteen idols, is consecrated as engaged in Rasakreeda. As it provides this divine joy to the devotees who visit the temple this place can rightly be referred to as Anandapuram. Hence worshipping in this temple is famed to provide worldly joy and comforts as well as salvation without any more re-births. Many devotees visit this temple during the Vaishakha period as it is considered to be especially bountiful. Vaishakha is the period when the Lord, along with Lakshmi Devi travels through the sky. They do so to ascertain that all that the Lord had created after everything had been absorbed into Him during the deluge at the end of the Kalpa leads the life as per the laws prescribed. The creation at that time includes those that have been given new forms as per their deeds in the previous births and the Vedas and Puranas with their keepers. This season is considered to be the best for the worship of the lord as it is the time when the world is filled with flowers and fruits and this is the reason for the Lord to visit the earth at this time. Those who worship Lord Vishnu at this time are blessed with all wealth and salvation. All the Devas and the Holy Rivers make their presence in the water bodies of the earth at this time. It is auspicious to have a bath early in the morning and visit the Vishnu temples during the Vaishakha period. The Skandapurana states that even taking one step to have a bath in the holy waters during this time will give as much weal as is gained by performing ten thousand Ashwamedha Yagas. Worshipping the Lord at Anandapuram, which is considered to be the Vaikunda on earth, during Vaishakha in the morning after a bath, will bring all worldly joy and eternal salvation. It is auspicious to give alms especially those that bring some respite to the heat like water, footwear and fans. Anandapuram Mahavishnu Kshethram is situated 4 kilometres away from Nellayi, between Chalakudy and Trichur.
