There are many legendary stories that connect the Goddess at Venpalavattam in Thiruvananthapuram district with the history of Kannaki of Tamil Nadu. More than that are the words of the devotees who have experienced the benevolence of the Goddess. At one time this temple was famous as the Mookambika temple of the South. The stories associated with this temple are as old as the time of Sree Jagad Guru Shankaracharya. In ancient times the Goddess here was worshipped as the effulgence of Aadiparaashakthi. As the Goddess of knowledge, she was worshipped by the sages and the ordinary people. It is believed that once Shankaracharya became more aware of the effulgence of the Goddess here and came here to worship her. The Goddess has been worshipped as the gentle Bhagavathy and the fierce Bhadrakali. When Sree Narayana Guru and Sri Chattambi Swamikal were going around trying to better the condition of the people, they came to realise the power of the two Goddesses at Venpalavattam and asked the people around here to restore the two temples and worship the powers there. So, the ancient stone idol and the idol carved out of wood were - consecrated and pujas were conducted. Recently the restoration work of the temples has been completed. This is the only place where the Goddess is worshipped in these two forms.
