Pariyanampatta Devi Temple

History

This temple is one of the famous temples of Kerala, dedicated to Bhagavathy. This is one of the largest Devi temples of Valluvanad Desam in the Palghat district. The presiding deity is known as the Goddess of 14 Desams. The temple and its precincts have much resemblance to that of the Mookambika temple in Kollur. Pooramabolsavam, the famous festival of the temple which comes on Kumbham 1-7, attracts a large number of devotees. 'Moorthiyaatom' on the eve of Pooram (Valiyaarattu) is the unique feature of this temple. It is said that about 1400 years ago a Brahmin belonging to the Pariyanampatta Mana went along more with his servant to have Darshan of Devi Mookambika and having received the blessings of the Devi decided to return to his Native place. While returning he rested for a while on the banks of a river. He happened to open a bundle which he was carrying and inside it, he found the Thidambu' of the Devi. He understood the wish of the Devi and decided to install the Devi there. He sent for the people of 14 'Desoms' of Velluvanadu. The Chief 'Tanthri' of 'Ekattumana' performed the installation ceremony. Because the "Thidambu' was brought by the Tirumeni of Pariyanampatta, the Bhagawathy became known as Pariyanampatta Devi. The Nairs of Parampottil' were kept in charge of the temple administration. They were known as 'Padali'. The servant of the Brahmin was the chief person of the Chalavara Parola family. He was appointed the "Velichappadu. The river flowing by the temple’s side was later converted into a pond. The eldest member of the Kannannur Padaswaroopam Thrikkederi Moopil Nair became the "Uralan' of this temple. The temple is administered by HR&CE now. Vela is before the star Pooram in the month of Makara, Pooram starts on 1" Kumbha with the hoisting of the temple flag.
