Thiruvambady Sreekrishna Temple

History

This famous temple is situated on Shornur Road about 1 km north of the Vadakkumnathan Temple at Thrissur. This is one of the main participants in the world-famous Thrissur Pooram with Paramekavu as the other participant. The main deity is Unnikrishnan (the Lord as the infant). There is Bhagavathy to the left of the sanctum. Lord Ganesha and Dharmashastha are consecrated in separate shrines outside the Nalambalam. Legend says that the original idol was that of Parthasarathy and was in a temple at Edakkalathur, 15 km away from Thrissur. When there was a communal disturbance there, the people removed the idol and took it to more Thrissur. It was handed over to a Namboothiri couple at Kachanappilly Illam. They considered it as their own child and consecrated it in a small temple. The idol gave up the whip of Parthasarithi and took up the flute in one hand and the other was kept ever ready to receive the butter offered by the foster parents. The couple were also ardent devotees of Kodungaloor Bhagavathy and the man used to walk the 40 km to worship the Goddess at Kodungaloor. As old age made it impossible for him to undertake such an arduous walk, he felt heartbroken. The Goddess followed the man and her power got enshrined in the granite pillar at the Nalukettu (the inner courtyard). It is this consecrated pillar with Devi’s power that is in the sanctum to the left of that of the lord Balabhadrakali. Just outside the wall of the temple are consecrated Kukshi Ayyappa, Manikanda, Ghandakarna, Raktheswari and Bhairava. The sanctum sanctorum of the Lord was reconstructed in Krishnashila in 2011 with the dome at the top covered by gold-plated copper plate.
