The Goddess was the family deity of the ruler of Paravur. This temple stands at the place where the fort of the ruler of Paravur once stood. Hence it came to be known as Kottaykkakam Bhagavathy. Today the temple is very close to the Paravur KSRTC Bus stand. When Tippu Sultan attacked Paravur, the fort was destroyed and the ruler shifted residence to Parakadavu. There was a huge Balikkallu that belonged to the old temple which shows that the temple must have been a big one. Till some 50 years ago, the people of the locality used to light lamps there. Then the Akhila more Bhaaratheeya Ayyappa Seva Sangham took over the temple. Apart from the Goddess, Ganapathy, Shaasthaavu, Navagraham and Nagas were consecrated as sub-deities.
