Valavanad Lakshmi Narayana Temple

History

The Valavanad Lakshmi Narayana Temple is blessed by the presence of Goddess Durga depicted as bearing the conch, discus and mace and Goddess Kali with the sword in the right hand and the head of Darika in the left hand, consecrated in separate sanctums within the same compound. The one person responsible for bringing this temple into its present form is Prakash Swami. A devout child following in the footsteps of his father, Prakash Swami had been attracted by the philosophy and the compositions of Sri Narayana Guru. He used to visit various temples like Kalarkod Mahadeva temple and the Aravukad Bhadrakali temple (1968 to 1971) more at Punnapra even as a child. As he grew up he used to take other devotees also to Chottanikkara every Thursday (1972 to 2006). He also visited Guruvayoor, Palani and Kodungaloor every month. He also worshipped Thiruppathi and Mookambika. While staying in Valavanad he took up the initiative in renovating many temples that had been left neglected in this area. It was then that the Valavanad Lakshminarayana Prarthana Samithi was formed. Many astrologers predicted that the land was blessed by the presence of the divine. So, the place that Prakash Swami had been using as the prayer hall and his residence was broken down and the temple with the two sanctums was constructed at that place. Ganapathy, Sastha, Hanuman, Sivan, Subrahmanyan and the serpents were consecrated as subordinate deities. The rituals are prescribed by Kizpathayppilly mana Brahmasree Chitran Nampoothiripad, the Tantri of the temple. All devotees irrespective of caste and creed are welcomed into the temple. The main rituals include Maha Mruthyunjaya Homam on the first Saturday of every Malayalam month, Sarppa Pooja with Sarppa Pattu on the day of star Aayillyam of every month, On the day of star Karthika, Sudarshana Homam, Ashtadravya Ganapathy Homam and Bhagavathy Seva can be offered and Guruthi of 12 uruli on every Friday and other auspicious days. Annadanam and mass prayers are held every Sunday as an offering by the devotees. Apart from that there is no donation, no Hundi collection and no Dakshina accepted for the temple. Prakash Swami endeavours to find solutions for the difficulties of the devotees through rituals and prayers without accepting any money. The method followed by Prakash swami to know about the devotees reveals his divine power. He makes the devotee sit on a chair with both legs kept on the ground. Looking at the feet, Swami writes down all the details of the devotee much to the amazement of the person. There are innumerable devotees who admit that they have achieved great miraculous benefits from the prayers offered by Prakash Swami. Some of the important offerings that devotees can make in the temple include a Karyasidhi pooja for getting desired effects which are held on the last Sunday of every Malayalam month at 10.30 a.m. Annadanam can be offered thrice every day. Maha Mruthyunjaya Homam and Naranga Vilakku Pooja are offered on the first Saturday of every Malayalam month. On the day of star Karthika, Sudarshana homam, Ashtadravya Ganapathy Homam and Bhagavathy Seva can be offered. Aayillyam pooja with Sarppam parts can be offered on the day of Aayilliyam every month.
