Valamchuzy Sree Bhuvaneswary temple is one of the oldest temples in Pathanamthitta, popularly known as the Town of Temples. The temple is surrounded by the river Achankovil the fury of the waters has taken away much of the land that belonged to the temple. The remains of the forest that surrounded the temple can today be seen in the Sarppakavu. It is believed that the sword and the anklet kept in this temple were brought from the Kodungalloor temple. After the flood of 1096, a lot of reclamation and restoration has been undertaken with the help of the government to protect the temple. A bund more was constructed to make it easier to access the temple. The temple remained under the patronage of the Velluvettuvelil Madam family till 1974. Then it was handed over to the people of the 14 karas here. A committee is elected from the members of these places for the administration of the temple.
