This is one of the most famous temples in central Kerala dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya. It was the 14 prominent Brahmin families of Kidangoor in Kottayam district who started worshipping Lord Subramanya along with Lord Vishnu. Later they moved to other places and built temples for Lord Subrahmnanya there. This is one of the 16 that these Brahmins built. It is believed that a serpent slithered along the ground to show them the areas that belonged to its Lord Subrahmanya. They found a small hut in the middle of a forest and realized that there was a self-originated Siva Linga in the hut. This later more became the Peraykkaatt Sive temple. There were some Brahmins staying nearby. The visitors from Kidangoor had food from these houses and kept the idol of Subrahmanya in the hall. But when they tried to take it, the idol was found to be fixed to the ground. So, it was consecrated there. As Brahmins were staying there in groups, (koottu in Malayalam) the place came to be known as Koottumadham. Ganapathy and Vishnu are consecrated inside the temple complex and Yakshiyamma outside as sub-deities. Worshipping Lord Subrahmanya here is believed to cure most incurable diseases.
