Kadungalloor Sree Narasimhaswami Temple

History

This temple is situated at Kadungalloor on the Alwaye - Varapuzha route in Ernakulam district. The main deity is Lord Narasimha facing the east in a rounded sanctum. The idol is almost 5 feet tall. The murti worshipped here is referred to as Eka Chatrapati bhavam and because of this, there are no upa devatas inside the main temple. Sree Parthasarathy and Maha Vishnu are consecrated outside this temple. When Veera Marthanda Varma was ruling over Travancore, the Zamorin of Kozhikode had control over some parts of Kochi. These places were released more from the Zamorinan and Alangadu and Paravur were gifted to Travancore by the Cochin King. The Narasimha temple was at Alangodu. As it became difficult for the owners to manage the temple, it was handed over to four Namboothiri families in the Cocjhin state. The idol of Lord Narasimha was brought here from Ikkarakkadu in a wooden boat. Srimanikkuda, a jewel-studded umbrella was held over the idol to protect it from the sun and the rain. The treasury was also brought along with the idol. Even now during the festival, the families of the people who held the umbrella and safeguarded the treasury are given the duty of holding the umbrella above the idol when it is taken out and of carrying the treasury box. The temple is famous for its unusually big Balikallu. It is believed that the middle portion of the body of Jadayu, who tried to stop Ravana from kidnapping Sita, had fallen here.
