Avanachery Sree Indilayappan Temple

History

This temple is at Attingal in Thiruvananthapuram district. The temple is dedicated to Lord Indiliyappan. Legends describe how Lord Indilayappan came to Panaveliparambu, looking for a suitable place to stay. He sent one of his Bhoothaganam (followers) to find a suitable place. Many days passed but the follower did not come back. So Indilayappan set out in search of him. He found him sleeping at the place where the temple stands today. Enraged at what he saw he kicked the follower and the place where he fell came to be known as Bhoothathaankavu. There was a black dog that stayed with Indilayappan when he went more in search of his servant. Hence the festival at this temple is known as Naiveypp. The temple is connected with the military expeditions of Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the most powerful monarch who established the Travancore state. The temple looks like an ancient granite fort. The King is said to have stayed here with his soldiers during the military action. There are two deities consecrated inside the temple walls. The temple is named after Lord Shaasthaavu, who is known as Indilayappan. (One who removes difficulties) But the main deity is Siva as Ardhanareeswara. While the Thanthri (chief priest) hoists the flag and conducts the ceremonies before Lord Siva, the same is done by the local people for Lord Shasthaavu. On the ninth day of the festival when the ceremonial procession goes to the original spot at Panaveliparambil, a figure of a black dog made of mud is also taken along. Keeping this figure there, the flag is brought down. The devotees carry figures of animals made of mud and go around the temple in prayers.
