The temple is situated at Arangal, at Athiyannoor village of Neyyattinkara Taluk in Thiruvananthapuram district. Legends associate the temple with Sage Vyaghrapadan who was on a journey to locate the places that contained the divine presence of Lord Maheswara. On a new moon day, he saw a divine light in the place where the temple stands today. This place came to be known as Venpakal. He also was able to see the dance by Siva - Parvathy. The place where he saw the dance was named Arang and he consecrated the Siva linga at that spot. This later came to be referred to as the
more Arangal Siva temple. The God and the Goddess are worshipped in a pleasant form after the graceful dance and Ganapathy, Murugan and Ayyappan, the children of the celestial parents, are also consecrated nearby.
