Ayiramkanni Devi Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple is situated in Trichur on the Tipu Sultan Road. The name indicates that the Goddess is endowed with a thousand eyes. It is believed that in the beginning there was a Self-originated effulgence which was considered as that of Goddess Bhadrakali and was consecrated in a stone with Goddess Annapoorneswari also consecrated in the same as a smaller stone idol. Hundreds of years ago the temple was under the Kathotu family and it is supposed to have been handed over to the present management by a devotee of that family. They used to worship the Goddess in their own way. Legend says that more once a Thangal wanted to test the power of the Devi. He challenged the Goddess to allow him to see her if she really had a thousand eyes as was claimed. The Goddess wanted to subdue the ego of the man and first showed him five hundred eyes. When he was still adamant about seeing all of them, the Goddess revealed all the eyes. Then the Thangal fell dead there. Though he belonged to a different caste, he is believed to have become one with the Goddess. Even today offerings are made to the Thangal also. Many belongings to the Muslim community visit the temple even today to make offerings.
