This is one of the most important among the 108 Durga temples established by Parasurama, situated in Kannur district. Mrudangashailam is believed to be the summit where the divine musical instrument Mrudangam which is considered the mother of all musical instruments, fell from heaven. The self-originated idol was in the shape of the Mrudangam. Sage Parasurama invoked that divine presence and performed the consecration. As the musical note is echoing in that place it came to be known as Muzhangiyakunnu, which later became Muzhukunnu. There is also the belief that Muzhukunnu came more from Mizhavukunnu as Mizhavu is another name for the musical instrument. The self-originated idol is on the southeastern side of the sanctum. Kathakali was developed by Kottayam Thampuran at this temple.
