Sree Nagarukavu Kshetram, Poojappura, located at Chadiyara near Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is one of the most revered and prominent Nagarukavu temples in the region, with a sacred history believed to extend for more than two and a half centuries. The present temple is said to have originated as a simple sacred altar surrounded by several shrines and dense forest, and over the years, it gradually attained greater sanctity and spiritual significance through the divine presence associated with the temple and its deities. The principal deities worshipped here are Nagaraja, Nagaramma, and Nagakanya, with Sree Vasuki, regarded as the embodiment of the divine power of Lord more Siva, worshipped in the form of Nagaraja. Consequently, special importance is given to the worship of Lord Siva and the serpent deities. Devotees believe that the blessings of Nagaraja, Nagaramma, and Nagakanya bring happiness, prosperity, progress, fortune, and the blessing of good and loving children, and that these divine beings are easily pleased through sincere devotion and offerings. In an effort to further understand and strengthen the spiritual traditions and divine power of the temple, an Ashtamangalya Devaprasna was conducted in the presence of the temple’s Thanthri, the late Sri Pullamvazhi Devanarayanan Namboothiri, by the renowned astrologer Sri Thalayolapparambu Parameswaran. Following the findings of the Devaprasna, various prescribed remedial rituals and measures were carried out, after which the temple is believed to have experienced remarkable spiritual growth and attained a position of great importance beyond expectations. The temple is also associated with several traditional accounts and experiences of devotees that have been passed down through generations and continue to contribute to its aura of mystery and devotion. One such account describes a priest who, after blessing the worshippers, returned to the temple and later appeared wearing a garland of live snakes, including cobras, an incident that is remembered with awe by devotees. Another well- known local tradition concerns a child who wanted to eat a plantain fruit brought to the temple by a devotee as an offering to the deity. When the child’s mother explained that the fruit was meant for God and that it would be given to them after the offering, she took the child home. According to the traditional account, the following day, a plantain fruit was found at the entrance of their home bearing what appeared to be a deep mark resembling a snake bite, an incident that became widely known among the people of the surrounding area. Today, the temple is administered by a trust consisting of elected members who obtained the right to manage the temple from the family that governed it in earlier times. The temple observes several important religious occasions and festivals, including the Aayilya Maholsavam during the Malayalam month of Kanni, Nagapanchami Pooja on Shukla Paksha Panchami of the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, Mandala Pooja, and Ramayana Masacharanam, all of which attract devotees seeking the blessings and protection of the serpent deities. The temple is situated on Nagarukavu Temple Road, Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram, and its principal deities are Nagaraja and Sarpayakshi, with Ganapathy and Navagraha worshipped as important sub-deities. With its long history, distinctive serpent worship traditions, sacred environment, and enduring faith among devotees, Sree Nagarukavu Kshetram continues to hold a special place in the religious and cultural heritage of Thiruvananthapuram.
