Kadalassery Pisharikkal Bhagavathy Temple

History

This is one of the 108 famous Durga temples in Kerala, situated at Katalaaserri in Trichur district. Documents connected with the temple show that it was entrusted with the Oomabilly Mana by Najappayya, the Diwan of Cochin. The idol with four arms is consecrated facing the west. Ganapathy and Siva are the sub-deities.  There used to be a 28-day festival at the Peruvanam temple which had to be discontinued for various reasons. When the area was later affected by drought and famine, the Namboothiris of that area decided to start the festival again. For that Thiruvalayanoor Bhattathiri, Katalaayil Namboothiri and Komarath Menon were sent to Madurai to more bring the effulgence of Goddess Kamakshi from there. After intense meditation for 41 days, the Goddess appeared before them and promised Bhattathiri that she would come on the umbrella. Komarath Menon was told that the Goddess would come on the sword. The Goddess informed Katalaayil Namboothiri that she would appear at the Mandaram jetty at Aaraattupuzha when the Chothi star is at its zenith on the day of Star Pooram in the Malayalam month of Meenam. He consecrated the Goddess near his house and built a temple which came to be known as Katalaaserry Pisharikkal temple. The power that came on the umbrella was consecrated as Oorakathama and the power that came on the sword was consecrated as Pallissery Bhagavathy. The Goddess at Katalaaserri is believed to have the power to nullify poison. There is a story behind the Goddess being endowed with the power to remove poison. There was a Namboothiri in the Katalaayil mana who used to offer anti-venom treatment. When an expert in the same profession came from outside to test him he was able to overcome the threat. But he regretted what he had to do and submitted all his books on science and his instruments before the Goddess. The Matambu mana was also at Aarattupuzha. Once a Namboothiri of this family was affected by poison and was declared dead. As the relatives were preparing for the cremation, the Bhagavathy was being taken for the Vavaaraatt on the no-moon day of Thulaam. He had not actually died and hearing the beating of the drums he prayed that his family would bear the expenses of the festival if he was able to live. He was able to show that he was alive before he was cremated and after that, the family bore the expenses of the festival. The Nivedyam that is offered at the Aaraatt on this day is believed to be good for getting rid of poison from one’s body. The committee of elected representatives and the trustees of the mana have been managing the affairs of the temple.
