Chiravoor Sreekanda Dharma Sastha Temple

History

This temple is at Kizhakkum Bhagam in Chiravoor on the eastern side of Kollam district. It is believed to have been consecrated by Lord Parasurama and is hence hundreds of years old. There is a belief that Chiravoor was the place where Jatayu’s wings fell before the battle between Rama and Ravana. The main deities consecrated here are Lord Siva, Parvathy Devi, Ganapathy and Maha Vishnu inside the sanctum and Lord Shastha, Muruga, Bhoothathaan, Rakshass, Yogeeswaran and Bhairava moorthy outside. In a Kavu of 2 ½ acres, Naga Raja and Naga Yakshi are consecrated. The main offerings are Jaladhara and more Mruthyunjaya archana for Lord Siva, Kumkuma archana, Swayamvara archana and Naranga vilakku for Devi, Paal payasam for Vishnu, Neeranjanam and Ellu payasam for Dharma Sastha, and Bhasmabhishekam for Muruga. The annual festival is in the month of Meenam, from the day of the star Makayiram till the day of the star Uthram. Vinayaka Chathurthi is in the month of Chingam, Thaypooyam is in the month of Makaram, and all days of the star Aayilyam are special for this temple.
