Udupi Sree Krishna Temple, located at Thondankulangara in Alappuzha, is a prominent temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and is deeply associated with the devotion and traditions of the famous Udupi Sree Krishna Temple. According to the traditional story, the origin of the Udupi Krishna idol goes back to the time of Lord Krishna, when his wife Rukmini became devoted to his beautiful child form, known as Balakrishna. Rukmini commissioned the celestial architect Vishwakarma to create an idol of Balakrishna using sacred Saligrama stone, which she worshipped with great devotion. After Lord Krishna completed his earthly incarnation, the idol was said more to have been buried by Arjuna in Rukmini Vana and was subsequently lost during a flood that engulfed Dwarka. Centuries later in the 13th century, a ship travelling from Dwarka was caught in a severe storm near the shores of Udupi, where the sage Anandatirtha, later known as Madhwacharya, helped guide the ship safely to shore. As a gesture of gratitude, the captain offered the sage anything from the ship, but Anandatirtha chose the rocky ballast made of Gopichandana rather than its valuable cargo. When the rock was being transported, it broke open in places and revealed the sacred Saligrama idol of Balakrishna. Anandatirtha recovered the idol, performed the necessary rituals, and installed it according to sacred consecration procedures, establishing the foundation of the Udupi Krishna tradition. The story of the Thondankulangara temple is connected to the life and devotion of Bhima Bhattar, a Brahmin boy from Udyavara in Udupi who moved to Alappuzha in search of better opportunities and assisted his brother-in-law in his restaurant. Despite settling in Kerala and building a successful life and business, Bhima Bhattar retained his deep devotion to Udupi Sree Krishna. Through his honesty, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit, he eventually established a successful silver and gold business, while also developing a strong commitment to charitable activities and social welfare. Throughout his lifetime, he supported numerous scholarships, pensions, medical assistance programmes, charities, donations, and endowments, and he eventually wished to offer the people of Alappuzha what he regarded as the ultimate source of his blessings and prosperity: the worship of Udupi Krishna. This devotion led to the establishment of the Udupi Sree Krishna Temple at Thondankulangara, bringing the spiritual tradition of Udupi Krishna to Alappuzha. The temple celebrates several important festivals and observances, including Vishu, Sree Krishna Jayanthi, Prathishta Dinam during the Malayalam month of Edavam, Ramayana Masacharanam, and Navaratri. Lord Krishna is the presiding deity of the temple, and there are no separately designated sub-deities listed. Through its religious traditions, cultural celebrations, and association with the devotion of Bhima Bhattar, the temple has become a significant spiritual landmark in Thondankulangara and a place where devotees can experience the timeless traditions of Lord Krishna worship in Kerala.
