Vedagiri Kalinjali Sree Mahadeva Temple

History

This Temple is on the western side of Vedagiri. Vedagiri is near Ettumanoor in Kottayam district. The place has been mentioned in ancient writings like the Unnuneeli Sandesham. The temple is believed to be the original consecration of the famous Ettumanoor Mahadeva temple and is at a distance of 5km from there. Legends say that in the Dwapara era, when the Pandavas were living in the forest, they came here and Maharshi Veda Vyasa imparted lessons to them. On top of the Vedagiri are the remains of the hermitage and the school of Vyasa. There is a more stone idol of Vyasa consecrated there. There are water bodies named Vyasatheertham and Pancha theertham, tall stones believed to represent the five Pandavas and the place where Panchali worshipped the Goddess. There is a temple of Sastha believed to have been consecrated by Dharmaputhra. As the Moksha Theertha there is supposed to have been used by the Pandavas for rituals for the departed ancestors; many people come there for this even today. To the west of Vedagiri is the Krishna temple consecrated by Dharmaputhra. There is a legend that Parasurama prayed to the idol given to him by Goddess Parvathy at this place, and after 1500 years of worship, put it in the Mokshatheertham. This is the idol consecrated at Kumaranelloor.
