Thirunayathode Sivanarayana Temple, located at Nayathode near Angamaly in Ernakulam district, is a historic temple dating back to the 11th–12th century CE. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, the temple is a fine example of Kerala temple architecture with a Vritha Vimana (circular sanctum). The temple complex comprises the Sreekovil, Namaskara Mandapam, Valiyambalam, Nalambalam, eastern and western Gopurams, Agrasala (Oottupura), a two-storeyed Devaswom Malika, and an ancient well, all enclosed within a traditional laterite compound wall. The granite-built Sreekovil is adorned with beautifully preserved murals and crowned with a copper-clad roof. The sanctum enshrines an east-facing Shiva Linga, while more beautifully sculpted images of Lord Siva and Lord Vishnu are placed together on a pedestal in front of the sanctum, with separate rituals and offerings performed for both deities. The temple is unique in that it has no subsidiary shrines. Its architectural highlights include intricately carved stone Dwarapalakas on all four sides of the sanctum, a Pranala supported by a Gana figure, and a square Ardhamandapa decorated with Navagraha sculptures on the ceiling. The temple’s valuable murals have been scientifically conserved by the Department of Archaeology, which also restored the Sreekovil, the eastern Gopuram, and the compound wall in 2003. Today, the temple is administered by the Temple Trust and remains an important centre of worship as well as a significant monument of Kerala’s architectural and cultural heritage.
