Chemmanthatta Sree Mahadeva Temple is one of
the revered 108 Shivalayams of Kerala, located at Chemmanthatta in Chowannur
Panchayat, Thalappilly Taluk, Thrissur district. According to tradition, the
temple was consecrated by Sage Parashurama, while another legend attributes its
origin to Lord Brahma, from whom the place is believed to have derived its
name, Brahmanthatta. The temple is renowned for its unique Dravidian-style
circular Sreekovil (Vatta Sreekovil) with a copper-clad roof and its majestic
east-facing Maha Shivalinga, representing Lord Shiva in His fierce Raudra Bhava
following the Daksha Yaga. To symbolically pacify this aspect of Shiva, Lord
Vishnu is also worshipped within the temple. The temple complex

important sub-shrines dedicated to Maha Ganapathy, Bhagavathy, Narasimha Moorthy,
Shasta with Purna and Pushkala, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, Vettakkorumakan, Vana
Durga, and Bhadrakali. Daily rituals and special poojas are conducted with great
devotion, while the annual festivals and Sabarimala pilgrimage traditions
attract large numbers of devotees. The temple is also noted for its ancient
temple pond, red stone architecture, and exquisite murals dating back to the
17th and 18th centuries, making it an important spiritual, historical, and
architectural landmark of Kerala.
