Kadammanitta Devi Temple is an ancient and revered temple located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. Dedicated to Maha Bhairavi, the temple is renowned across South Kerala for its spectacular Padayani festival, one of the state’s most vibrant and unique ritual art forms. Every year, thousands of devotees and visitors gather here during the annual festival, held in April or May, to witness the magnificent Padayani performances. The festival is celebrated with immense devotion, enthusiasm, and cultural fervour, making it one of the major attractions of the region. According to local legend, Maha Bhairavi became enraged by the unlawful occupation of her land and burned the entire area with the fire from her eyes. Over time, the land turned into a dense forest. One day, the goddess appeared before one of the local leaders in the form of Kadamma and expressed her desire to reside at a particular spot. A temple was subsequently built at the place she selected, and the area later came to be known as Kadammanitta, in memory of Kadamma. The temple is widely believed to possess immense spiritual power, and devotees have unwavering faith that Maha Bhairavi answers sincere prayers. Pilgrims from different parts of Kerala and beyond visit the temple seeking blessings for marriage, children, education, good health, prosperity, and overall well-being. Many devotees return to the temple after the fulfilment of their wishes to offer prayers and express their gratitude to the goddess. The presiding deity of the temple is Maha Bhairavi. The temple complex also houses separate shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna, along with a shrine for Mala Deva, who is regarded as the original guardian of the goddess. Devotees visit the temple throughout the year to participate in various rituals and offer special poojas. The annual 10-day temple festival and Vishu, Kerala's traditional harvest festival celebrated in April, attract a large number of devotees and tourists. These occasions are marked by grand celebrations, traditional rituals, and the famous Padayani performances that showcase Kerala's rich cultural heritage.
