Sree Veerabhadra Kshethram at Cheruvathur in Kasaragod district is one of the oldest and most revered temples of North Malabar, dedicated to Lord Sree Veerabhadra, the fierce and powerful manifestation of Lord Siva. Renowned for its rich mythology, unique traditions, and centuries-old spiritual heritage, the temple has been a prominent centre of worship for generations, drawing devotees seeking courage, protection, prosperity, and divine blessings. The temple's origin is closely connected with the legendary Daksha Yagam. Daksha Prajapathi deliberately insulted Lord Siva by excluding Him from the great sacrificial ritual. Unable to bear the humiliation of her husband, Sati Devi immolated herself in the sacrificial fire. Overcome with grief more and divine anger, Lord Siva created the mighty warrior Sree Veerabhadra and Goddess Mahakali from His matted hair. They destroyed the sacrificial arena, punished Daksha and his supporters, and restored cosmic justice. After completing their divine mission, Lord Siva instructed them to perform penance before descending to Earth to protect righteousness and bless devotees. According to temple tradition, Sree Veerabhadra, accompanied by Mahakali and guardian deities such as Sree Sasthavu, Sree Kshethrapalakan, Sree Vettakkorumakan, Sree Kannikorumakan, and Sree Oorppazhassi, travelled through North Malabar after worshipping Lord Payyur Perumal. Reaching the sacred land of Cheruvathur, He was captivated by its spiritual significance and chose it as His permanent abode. Local tradition narrates that the Lord appeared as a mighty warrior and visited the Kambikkath Tharavadu at Kayappallipadikkal, entrusting His shield and sword to the family. After receiving their hospitality, He entered a sacred pond for ritual purification and instructed them to offer flowers and turmeric if He did not return. When He disappeared beneath the water, several miraculous events followed. Astrologers revealed that the mysterious warrior was Lord Veerabhadra Himself, who had chosen the place as His eternal abode. The family's pooja room was later converted into a sanctum, and in due course the present temple was established. The divine presence of Lord Veerabhadra is believed to have brought prosperity and abundant harvests to the region, earning Cheruvathur the title of the "Land of Harvesting Gold. One of the temple's most distinctive features is its rare sanctum, where Lord Sree Veerabhadra is enshrined on the left and Goddess Mahabhadra (Sree Bhadra), symbolising prosperity and auspiciousness, on the right. The temple also houses important sub-deities including Sree Sasthavu, Sree Kshethrapalakan, Goddess Kalaratri (Bhadrakali), Sree Vettakkorumakan, Sree Oorppazhassi, and Sree Kannikorumakan. Statues of Valiyaveettil Mappila and Nair Achan, placed before the sanctum, honour their devotion and reflect the temple's enduring tradition of communal harmony. Located about 1.5 km east of Cheruvathur Railway Station and 1 km from the National Highway, the temple is easily accessible to pilgrims. It is presently administered by the Malabar Devaswom Board, which oversees its rituals, festivals, and conservation activities. The annual Meenam Ulsavam, celebrated over thirty-two days during the Malayalam month of Meenam, is among the grandest temple festivals in North Malabar. Highlights include Meena Pooram, Vayalil Aarattu, and Madalachirappu, along with colourful processions, traditional rituals, cultural performances, and folk art forms that attract thousands of devotees every year. Following a successful Devaprasnam, the temple has undergone extensive renovation, including restoration of the ancient temple pond and the conduct of the sacred Brahma Kalasa Mahotsavam with the generous support of devotees. Today, Sree Veerabhadra Kshethram stands as a living symbol of Kerala's spiritual, cultural, and architectural heritage, preserving its sacred legends and timeless traditions while continuing to inspire countless devotees with faith, devotion, and divine grace.
