Nedungal Sree Krishna Swamy Temple

History

Nedungal Sree Krishna Temple, situated at Kunnackal near Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district, is a renowned ancient temple dedicated to Lord Sree Krishna. Located in the heart of Kunnackal, the temple features a rare circular sanctum (Sreekovil) facing east and follows traditional Tantric customs. Although the exact period of its construction is unknown, the temple's long-standing traditions, including the offering of Appam on every Rohini star and the special observance of Ashtami Rohini, clearly indicate that Lord Krishna has been the principal deity since ancient times. Revered as Santhanagopala, the Lord is believed to bless devotees with prosperity, peace, and the gift of children, attracting numerous couples who perform more Santhanagopala Homam and Pushpanjali. The temple also enshrines Lord Siva, Lord Ganapathy, Brahma Rakshas, and the Serpent Gods as sub-deities, each worshipped with special offerings according to age-old customs. Managed by the Nedungal Devaswom Trust under the guidance of the traditional trustee families, the temple celebrates its annual Meenam Ulsavam from Chothi to Thiruvonam, culminating in the grand Arattu. Other important festivals include Sree Krishna Jayanti (Ashtami Rohini), Vishu, Kuchela Dinam, Navaratri, Ramayana Masacharanam, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Thiruvonam Oottu, and Vaikkath Ashtami. Rich in history, devotion, and spiritual traditions, Nedungal Sree Krishna Temple continues to be one of the most important centres of worship in the region, inspiring generations of devotees with its sacred heritage.
