Sree Mundakkal Karinkalikavu Temple, situated at Aakkaparambu, Kuzhimanna, in Malappuram district, Kerala, is the revered Moolasthanam (original seat) of the renowned eighteen-and-a-half Karinkali temples. According to temple legend, Goddess Karinkali arrived at Kottapparambu in Puliyakkodu after her victorious battle with Bhadrakali, making this sacred site one of immense spiritual importance. The temple is distinguished by its rare sanctum, where Sree Karinkali faces east while Sree Chovva Bhagavathy (Bhadrakali) faces west, a unique form of consecration seldom seen in Kerala temples. Karuvettan, regarded as an incarnation of Lord Siva, is worshipped as the principal sub-deity. Another remarkable feature is the ancient square-shaped well in the temple courtyard, believed to more have been created by the Goddess's sacred sword. Daily worship is offered to Sree Karinkali through abhishekam and nivedyam, while special turmeric and cucumber offerings are made to Chovva Bhagavathy during the sacred Chovva Vilakku ritual, when the western entrance of the sanctum is ceremonially opened. The temple's Prathishta Dinam is observed on the Aswathy star in the Malayalam month of Mithunam, and its principal festivals include Thalappoli, Karinkali Thira, and Paalum Vellari. The Thalappoli festival, celebrated once every alternate year, is a distinctive event during which deities from neighbouring shrines symbolically participate in the celebrations, while the traditional Naattu Thalappoli is conducted every twelve years in accordance with ancient custom. Devotees firmly believe that the blessings of Mundakkal Amma remove obstacles, protect from adversities, grant good health, marital harmony, progeny, and academic success. A unique and highly revered offering at the temple is Mutturukkan, in which a coconut is ritually cut before the Goddess to symbolically remove obstacles and fulfil the sincere prayers of devotees.
