Bhayankavu Bhagavathy Temple, located on Alathiyoor Pallikadavu Road at Kavilakkad, Purathur, in Malappuram district, is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. The temple, situated about 14 km from Tirur Railway Station, is renowned for its spiritual significance and rich ritual traditions. The presiding deity is Goddess Bhagavathy, enshrined in a granite idol within the square sanctum sanctorum, while Lord Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappan, Kshethrapalan, and the Nagaraja (Serpent Deities) are worshipped as sub-deities. The temple celebrates three major annual festivals: Kala Vela Ulsavam on the 1st day of the Malayalam month of Thulam, Makarachovva on the first Tuesday of Makaram, more and the grand Thalappoli Mahotsavam, observed throughout the month of Kumbham. The month-long Thalappoli festival is especially famous for the traditional Pavakkoothu (shadow puppet theatre), Kalamezhuthu using naturally prepared coloured powders, and vibrant rituals that preserve Kerala's ancient temple arts. Hundreds of women and young girls participate in the sacred Thalappoli procession, carrying decorated plates and lighted lamps as offerings to the Goddess, praying for peace, prosperity, and family well-being. Traditional folk performances such as Poothan and Thira, along with colourful kolams, ritual effigies, and devotional ceremonies, add to the grandeur of the celebrations, attracting large numbers of devotees from across the region and making Bhayankavu Bhagavathy Temple one of the prominent Bhagavathy temples in Malappuram district.
